The Central State Archive of Literature and Art of the Lithuanian SSR was established in 1968 June 12th. Head of the Archives Board under the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR in 1968 June 11th by order no. 15, after reorganization in 1962 of The Department of Literature and Art established in the Central State Archive of the Lithuanian SSR.

To start its independent life, the archive received 11 full-time employees, a 102.8 m2 storage room and two work rooms in the premises of the Central State Archive of the Lithuanian SSR at Mindaugo Street. 8. At that time, the archive had 111 fonds, 12085 storage units.

In the spring of 1970, the archive was moved to the premises of the Central State Historical Archive of the Lithuanian SSR at Gerosios vilties str. 10, and in 1989 returned to its former premises on Mindaugo st. 8.

In the 1990, the Chief Archives Board under the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Lithuania on July 25th by order no.37 renamed the archive to State Art Archive of Lithuania, and in 1993, the General Directorate of Lithuanian Archives on May 28 by order no. 70 to – Lithuanian Archives of Literature and Art.

In 2008, before opening the premises on Mindaugo st. 8 reconstruction works, the Lithuanian Archives of Literature and Art was moved to the premises of the Central State Archive of Lithuania at O. Milašiaus St. 19.

The archive was managed by directors Genovaitė Suveizdiene (1968–1974); Egidijus Banionis (1974-1985); Nijolė Baškytė (1985–1991); Aleksandras Guobys (1991-1994); Vida Šimėnaitė (1994–2015); Juozapas Blažiūnas (2016–2024). Since 2024 the archive is managed by Saulius Zubrys.
